Making Your Shoes Last!
Wouldn’t it be great if your shoes could last forever? Unfortunately, no shoes have superhero capabilities, not even very high quality ones. Over time, all shoes will wear and tear; however, there are things you can do to preserve them for longer. Find out with our expert tips below!
Tips to Make Your Shoes Last Longer
You owe it to yourself, and to your money, to help preserve your shoes as much as possible. Follow these best practices to extend their life.
Waterproof Your Shoes
Waterproofing your shoes (use a waterproofing spray-on), will extend their life immensely. It’s well known that water in any volume erodes shoes. If your shoes are already waterproof, you don’t need to worry too much. Heels and flats disintegrate the easiest and are not waterproof by default, so waterproofing them should be a priority. Ideally, waterproofing should occur once a month for the best results.
Wear Appropriate Footwear for the Weather
This sounds like a no-brainer but, surprisingly, many women get it wrong. That is, they wear the wrong shoes for the weather. For instance, they wear sandals in cold weather. Even waterproofed shoes can only handle so much if worn at the wrong time. Don’t get caught in heavy rain wearing your delicate flats or sandals. If you do, then remove excess moisture and stuff your shoes with newspaper to retain their shape.
Stop Your Boots from Wilting
No one likes their much-loved boots to lose their shape. Maintain their shape by storing them with stuffed newspaper, shoe trees or laying them down flat. This will keep them from creasing at the ankles and sagging.
Don’t Let Them Get Dull
Leather shoes should be polished and conditioned as soon as they start looking dull and worn. There are a number of great products on the market to help you do this. To additionally conceal scratches, best to use a cream that is one shade lighter than your shoe. If you’re still having problems, consider taking them to a cobbler.
Use Baby Powder for Oil Stains
This is an old wives’ tale that has been proven to work with many shoes. If something greasy has dropped on your shoes, a sprinkle of baby powder will absorb the stain. Do not use this trick on suede shoes.
Air out Your Shoes
You may not realise the full extent that shoes need to be aired out. Just like with items like bras and gym bags, they need time to breathe and recover their shape.
